Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Several Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) advocating for the rights of individuals living with HIV are expressing satisfaction with the recent ruling by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC). This ruling instructs Pastor Martin Ssempa to cease posting discriminatory comments against people living with HIV.

In 2019, the Centre for Health Human Rights and Development (CEHURD), a civil society organization, filed a complaint with the EOC against Pastor Martin Ssempa. They accused him of disseminating discriminatory and stigmatizing remarks about individuals with HIV on his social media platforms.

During a joint press conference held at the Uganda Network of Young People Living with HIV/AIDS (UNYPA) offices in Kampala, Gloria Nawanyaga, a human rights lawyer, emphasized that these discriminatory messages hinder efforts to combat HIV/AIDS. She also stressed the importance of the public embracing efforts to disseminate information about the HIV pandemic.

Furthermore, the EOC directed Ssempa to remove any messages considered discriminatory against individuals living with HIV from his social media accounts. Nakibuuka Noor Musisi, the Deputy Executive Director for Programmes at CEHURD, warned that if Ssempa does not comply, they will not hesitate to take legal action.

Ruth Awon, the Deputy Executive Director of UNYPA, expressed concern about the rising number of new HIV infections, particularly among the youth.
