EC Unveils Strategic Plan and Roadmap for Pending Hoima Elections

Wednesday, August 2, 2023

Justice Simon Mugenyi Byabakama, the chairman of the Uganda Electoral Commission, unveiled a strategic plan and roadmap to address key pending national-level activities. The plan focuses on conducting elections for administrative units, LC I and LC IIs, Women Councils, and Committees.

During the launch event, Justice Byabakama commended the government for clarifying the schedule of these elections. According to the Commission’s roadmap, these elections are slated to be held within the next six months, prior to the General Election.

While emphasizing the importance of adequate funding, the Commission urged the government to allocate the required resources to ensure the smooth execution of the electoral process before the General Election takes place.

In a cautionary note, Justice Byabakama addressed political parties and organizations, stating that the release of the strategic plan and roadmap should not be interpreted as a green light for unrestrained campaign-related activities. Although consultations are permitted under the law, campaigns must adhere to a program approved and regulated by the Electoral Commission.

Mulekwah Leonard, the Secretary of the Uganda Electoral Commission, emphasized the need to avoid last-minute implementation by launching the strategic plan ahead of time. By providing clear dates for various activities, the Commission aims to maintain a systematic and organized approach to the forthcoming elections.

With the strategic plan and roadmap now in place, the Uganda Electoral Commission aims to foster a transparent, fair, and orderly electoral process, ensuring the democratic representation of citizens’ voices and choices. As the country prepares for these significant electoral events, all stakeholders are urged to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Commission to uphold the integrity of the democratic process.
