Gen. Katumba Urges Schools to champion tree planting campaign

Sunday, October 1, 2023

The Minister of Works and Transport, General Edward Katumba Wamala believes that planting trees starting with schools is the best agenda to restore the lost forest cover in the country.

Katumba says being the future generation, once children are taught the benefits of planting trees then the country will in the future be safe on forest cover.

The Minister said this while responding to questions from the journalists after gracing the Homecoming event of former students of Busoga College Mwiri in Jinja where they also celebrated the 112 year anniversary of the school.

Hellen Basuuta Nangonzi, the Director Marketing and Customer Experience at Absa Bank says in their five year project of planting One million trees across the country, Busoga College Mwiri has got about 30,200 trees to plant.

According to the Uganda Forestry Authority (UFA), the country’s forestry cover decreased from 54 percent in 1900 to 12.4 percent in 2017, meaning 2.4 hectares of forest cover was lost during that period.
