Gen Muhoozi Sparks Controversy by Directing Kyabazinga to Collect Gifted Cows

Tuesday, November 21, 2023

The recent union of Kyabazinga of Busoga, William Wilberforce Gabula Nadiope IV, with Jovia Mutesi at Christ Cathedral Bugembe drew dignitaries, including Vice President Jessica Alupo and Church of Uganda Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu. However, the joyous occasion took an unexpected turn when Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Senior Presidential Advisor in charge of Special Operations, presented the couple with ten cows, sparking frustration and anger within a segment of the Ugandan population.

Gen Muhoozi’s seemingly generous gift turned controversial during the wedding reception when he declared, “So when you are ready, your Majesty, please come and pick your cows.” This statement was quickly condemned as rude, impolite, and culturally insensitive, particularly by those who perceived it as a breach of the kingdom’s cultural norms.

Critics, including Justice Hunter and Hassan Sena, voiced their displeasure on social media, labeling Muhoozi’s actions as arrogant and inappropriate. Some questioned the etiquette of instructing the respected king to personally retrieve the gifted cows, emphasizing the importance of respecting cultural norms, especially during significant events.

Journalist Sam Waswa pondered the precedence of the guest’s culture over the host’s, advocating for visitors to adhere to local customs. Desire Vestergaard stressed the necessity for well-traveled individuals, especially diplomats, to respect the cultural practices of their hosts. Elit Apio took issue with Muhoozi’s perceived disrespect towards an elder and honored person, highlighting the significance of maintaining the right tone in cultural contexts.

Minister for Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries, Frank Tumwebaze, defended Muhoozi, explaining the unique cultural practices surrounding the gifting of cows in Munyankole culture, where physically selecting cows from a kraal is customary.

Despite the controversy, Kyabazinga expressed gratitude to Gen Muhoozi and other friends for their support during the marriage ceremony. The royal wedding, attended by powerful officials from Busoga kingdom and the Ugandan government, was officiated by Anglican Archbishop Stephen Kaziimba, drawing thousands of Basoga to witness the royal couple’s procession from the Cathedral to the Palace.

The clash of cultural sensitivities at this event serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding and respecting diverse customs in a multicultural society.
