Gov’t Asked Desilt River Nyamugasani to Mitigate Flooding

Monday, October 2, 2023

Kasese, District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Local leaders and residents in Kasese district, living along the Nyamugasani River, are urging the government to give priority to desilting the river as a crucial measure to mitigate flooding during the upcoming rainy season.

They argue that while the government and its partners have concentrated their efforts on desilting the Nyamwamba River, the Nyamugasani River continues to pose a significant threat to the local community during heavy rainfall.

Annet Mutswanga, a resident of Kyalhumba, expressed her frustration, citing two recent drownings in the Nyamugasani River caused by heavy rains and rising water levels. She criticized the government’s response to flooding in the district, emphasizing that all the attention has been directed toward the Nyamwamba River, while neglecting the plight of people living near other rivers that face recurrent disasters.

Ivan Bwambale, the chairperson of Kyalhumba town council, revealed that they have raised this concern with various leaders but have received no response, despite the inadequate local community efforts. Augustine Baluku, another resident, called on the government to provide equal services to all citizens, as they all face similar consequences.
