Summary:

  • Amidst completing three terms, Ms. Susan Amero, the Woman MP for Amuria District, announces she will not seek re-election in 2026, opting for a new chapter in farming, citing a desire to move beyond perpetual political cycles.

The Member of Parliament representing Amuria District, Ms. Susan Amero, has declared that she will not seek re-election in the upcoming 2026 polls. Ms. Amero, who has previously served three terms—first in 2011 and then again in 2016—initially stood as a candidate on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket. However, in 2021, she ran as an Independent candidate after losing to Ms. Rhoda Acen in the NRM primaries.

In a phone interview from her rural home in Wera, where she is spending the festive season, Ms. Amero expressed her decision, stating, “I have done my part, I will not come back to politics again; look for another person.”

Having served for three terms and with experience in both party and independent politics, Ms. Amero revealed her plans to explore a new chapter in life through farming projects in her village. Addressing potential skeptics, she remarked, “They want to eat my money and then throw me out. They think I don’t read the moods, but I do.”

Ms. Amero emphasized her commitment to moving to the next level and declared, “I can’t be in the same class forever; those who want to die in politics, let them die.”

Public reactions to her decision have been mixed. Residents like Ms. Joyce Akello of Willa Sub-county praised Ms. Amero for her leadership skills and her decision not to seek re-election. Akello also criticized politicians who use their financial resources to manipulate elections despite lacking popular support.

On the other hand, Mr. Musa Ecweru, the State Minister for Works, expressed his determination to continue serving his constituents if re-elected in 2026. Mr. Ecweru, who has been in Parliament since 2006, urged patience from the public and asked for their support at the polling stations.

In the broader political landscape of Teso, another longstanding legislator, Mr. Elijah Okupa, who has been in Kasilo County politics since 2001, was also mentioned.

Ms. Susan Amero, born on April 17, 1976, has an educational background that includes attending Rock View Primary School in Tororo District and completing her Uganda Certificate of Education at St Francis School for the Blind in Madera in 1993. She pursued further education, obtaining certificates in Tour and Travel Operations at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 1997. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and Diplomacy from Nkumba University and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the same institution.

In the 2021 elections, Ms. Amero secured 20,284 votes, while NRM’s Rhoda Acen received 18,341 votes. Ms. Deborah Mary Aleo of the Forum for Democratic Change obtained 11,469 votes, and independent candidates Eunice Aliamo and Eseza Alaso garnered 6,645 and 953 votes, respectively.
