Kabale District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Today, students at Kabale University staged a boycott, abstaining from both online and in-person classes. Their primary objective was to seek clarification from the university authorities regarding a sudden surge in surcharges, which escalated from 30,000 to 80,000 Ugandan shillings.

Kabale University, which attained public university status in 2015, witnessed the intervention of the Uganda police in an attempt to prevent the planned demonstration.

Throughout the university premises, students were observed donning their academic gowns, symbolizing their dissatisfaction with the recent surcharge increase. These students argue that this day marks their collective decision to strike in protest of what they perceive as an unjustifiable surge in surcharges imposed by the university administration.

Their discontent stems from the belief that despite the institution’s status as a public university with relatively higher fees, the quality of services provided falls short of expectations. The students passionately assert that it is imperative for the university administration to actively address and alleviate the burden imposed by these surcharges.

In response to the ongoing unrest, Tukamushaba Amos, the Dean of Students at Kabale University, acknowledges the legitimacy of the students’ concerns. He reassures them that these issues are valid and can be addressed. Tukamushaba also highlights the possibility of system-related faults contributing to these problems and extends an invitation for students to contact him if they encounter any issues.

Moreover, Tukamushaba proposes a potential solution, suggesting that if surcharges were exceedingly high in the previous semester, there might be a reduction in the upcoming semester to rectify the situation.
