Police in Kanungu are searching for a 30-year-old man suspected of murdering a 67-year-old villager in a brutal attack fueled by alleged witchcraft accusations.

Dan Kakyiga, a resident of Myakarambi village in Nyakatoma parish, Kihanda, is accused of killing Stephen Begumisa from Ibarya village in Nyakibuga parish on January 23, 2024, around 4:00 PM.

According to reports, Kakyiga brutally attacked Begumisa, inflicting severe injuries to his face, head, and resulting in the amputation of his right arm.

Police believe the motive behind the crime stems from longstanding domestic conflicts between the suspect and the deceased. These disputes reportedly centered on accusations of witchcraft that Begumisa allegedly directed towards Kakyiga and his family.

Previous conflicts had necessitated intervention from Kanungu police, who facilitated a reconciliation and encouraged harmonious living between the two families.

Following the attack, a team of Homicide detectives and Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) visited and documented the crime scene. Witness statements were collected, and Begumisa’s body was transported to Kanungu Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Kakyiga’s mother has been apprehended to assist with the ongoing investigation. However, the prime suspect remains at large, prompting a manhunt by Kanungu police.
