Lira District | The Black Examiner – Lira District Chairman, Richard Cox Max Okello Orik, expressed his willingness to transfer the Lira district chambers building to Lira City and move to the new district headquarters in Ogur Sub County once government funds are provided for its construction. This decision aligns with the district council’s resolution to generate revenue by leasing the district chambers.

Following a meeting with the parliamentary Public Service and Local Government Committee, Okello Orik informed Voice of Lango that they are awaiting the funds required to initiate the relocation process to the new Lira district headquarters in Ogur Sub County.

Okello Orik confirmed their readiness to vacate the district chambers building in favor of Lira City.

Lira City Mayor, Sam Atul, stated that they anticipate mediation from the Ministry of Local Government to address property-sharing matters between Lira District and Lira City.

Chairperson of the Public Service and Local Government Committee, Martin Ojara Mapenduzi, cautioned districts where new cities were established against selling city properties. Ojara Mapenduzi, who also serves as the Bardege-Layibi Division MP in Gulu City, urged the Minister of Local Government to instruct districts to cease the unauthorized sale of land within city boundaries.

Ojara Mapenduzi accused the district land boards of Lira, Arua, and Gulu of improperly issuing land titles for properties within city limits.

Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, clarified that districts should not relocate until receiving approval from the Ministry of Local Government. Magyezi confirmed that each district will receive 1 billion shillings for the construction of their respective new headquarters, with the funding allocated in subsequent financial years.
