Kisoro District | The Black Examiner – In Kisoro District, law enforcement reported on Monday the arrest of an individual associated with the M23 rebel group from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on charges of aggravated robbery. The spokesperson for the Kigezi region police, Mr. Elly Maate, identified the apprehended suspect as Gestin Ngonga, a 22-year-old resident of Rucuro Kiwanja territory in the DRC.
According to the police, on Sunday (September 10), Ngonga allegedly intercepted Lawrence Nasasira, a resident of Kakanke village in Kisoro District, who was riding a motorcycle. Ngonga is said to have robbed Nasasira of Shs400,000 and two mobile phones. The incident occurred around 5 pm in Kinanira village, Mupaka town council, Kisoro District.
Mr. Maate stated, “It’s alleged that on September 10, 2023, at about 1700 hours at Kinanira village, Mupaka town council, as the victim was riding his motorcycle, he was intercepted by the said suspect who was armed with an SMG rifle No. CDFA2719381 with two magazines loaded with 55 rounds of live ammunition and robbed him of Shs400,000 and two mobile phones. Afterward, he was ordered to ride away.” Nasasira reported the incident to the Mupaka border security team in Kisoro District.
Ngonga was pursued and apprehended by UPDF 35 Battalion soldiers, who also recovered the rifle and the stolen phones. “The suspect being an M23 rebel, we handed the matter over to the UPDF officers at the 2nd division at Makenke in Mbarara city for further management,” stated the police spokesperson.
