Mathew Kirabo Remanded to Luzira Over Murder of Desire Mirembe

Mukono, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Mukono High Court Judge, Justice David Matovu, has remanded Dr. Mathew Kirabo, the convicted murderer of his girlfriend, Desire Mirembe, to Luzira Prison. Proceedings for his sentencing in the murder case are pending.

Kirabo, who had been on the run for several months, was arrested earlier this week in Nairobi, Kenya, through an extensive Interpol operation.

Police confirmed plans to extradite the fugitive murderer to Uganda for a sentencing ruling over the murder charges. On Friday morning, Kirabo, handcuffed and dressed in a white T-shirt and grey trousers, appeared before Mukono High Court Judge, Justice David Isabirye, who remanded him to Luzira Prison.

Kirabo is accused of killing 19-year-old Desire Mirembe on July 10, 2015. Her body was discovered in Lugazi sugarcane plantations in Buikwe district on July 11, 2015.

Kirabo initially confessed to the murder and was charged at Jinja High Court before being remanded at Nalufenya prison in Jinja.

The case was later moved to Mukono High Court on the grounds that the crime had been committed within the Mukono jurisdiction.

After six years, the High Court in Mukono began hearing the case on October 6. On November 3, 2021, Kirabo mysteriously absconded from the court, leading to the state requesting a court order compelling his sureties to pay Shs 50 Million each. The case then proceeded without the suspect.

In 2021, the High Court in Mukono ruled that Kirabo had a case to answer in the murder of Desire Mirembe after the state presented evidence from 15 witnesses. Justice Kaweesa ruled that there was sufficient evidence to require Kirabo to defend himself and explain the accusations.

Notably, a confession video submitted as evidence indicated that Kirabo had picked up Mirembe from Ark hostel in Katanga before they headed to the Lugazi area.

In May 2022, Justice Henry Kawesa Isabirye convicted Kirabo of murder following a lengthy trial in his absence.
