Minister for Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, speaking on Saturday, firmly stated that the Ugandan government remains undeterred by the suspension of support from the World Bank. This resolve is contingent upon the nation’s unwavering stance against objectionable conduct.
The World Bank recently ceased prospective financial assistance for Ugandan projects, citing apprehensions regarding human rights transgressions tied to the enactment of the anti-homosexuality law. In an official communication, the Bank underscored that financial backing will continue to be withheld until Ugandan authorities institute adequate policies to safeguard marginalized communities, including lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and other LGBTQ+ groups.
In May, President Yoweri Museveni ratified the Anti-Homosexuality Act, which imposes severe penalties, including the potential for a capital punishment for acts of “aggravated homosexuality.” This legislation attracted significant censure from human rights bodies and Western nations, including the United States, which even raised the prospect of imposing sanctions.
Addressing attendees as the primary dignitary during the Ordination ceremony for 16 deacons elevated to the priesthood and 3 seminarians transitioning into deaconhood at the Kabale diocesan headquarters in Rushoroza, Baryomunsi affirmed that the determination of the government to uphold national norms and customs remains steadfast, irrespective of the World Bank’s verdict.
