Museveni Asks EAC to Integrate African Market for Prosperity as South Sudan Assumes Chairmanship

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has echoed the need for the integration of the East African Community, saying the move is critical for the region’s prosperity.

Museveni observed that prosperity cannot come from aid from foreigners or government handouts but from a family, company or an individual who produces a good or a service and sells it. 

The President made the remarks during the 23rd Ordinary Summit of the East African Community Heads of State that took place in Arusha, Tanzania.

The summit was held under the theme: “Accelerating Economic Recovery through Climate Action and Enhancing Food Security for Improved Livelihoods.”

Museveni further expounded that the market is a stimulus for wealth creation and prosperity and that is why as leaders, they advocate for the integration of the East African market.

During the summit, Somalia was admitted as the 8th member of the East African Community in accordance with Article 3 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the EAC.

The summit was also attended by the President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu, the President of Kenya, William Ruto, the President of Somalia, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, the Prime Minister of Rwanda, Dr Edouard Ngirente and,EAC Secretary General, Dr. Peter Mathuki, among others
