Summary:

  • A husband in Jinja City, Uganda, killed his wife and then himself due to suspicions of her having an affair with a self-proclaimed Apostle. The incident reflects previous cases of religious figures engaging in criminal acts.

Residents of Buleba Cell, Buwagi, in the Northern Division of Jinja City were struck by fear and grief on Saturday as a husband took his wife’s life before ending his own in a sugarcane plantation near their residence.

The deceased husband, Fred Mitega, had reportedly accused his wife, Zaina Nakisige, aged 40, of engaging in extramarital affairs with a self-proclaimed born-again Apostle, James Muwanguzi of Buwagi, Jinja Northern Division in Jinja City.

Locals discovered Nakisige’s body early on Saturday, prompting a police search for Mitega, who was found dead in the sugarcane plantation later that evening.

According to Kiira Regional Police Spokesperson, SP James Mubi, Mitega fatally struck his wife’s head with an axe around midnight on January 27, 2024. Muwanguzi has been arrested to aid investigations.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that Mitega suspected his wife of infidelity and sought help from local leaders, leaving behind six children.

The community revealed that Muwanguzi, the self-proclaimed Apostle, lacks registration as a pastor with the city’s Faith umbrella body. He allegedly lured married women to nightly prayers, claiming Jesus would return before 2026.

The bodies were taken to Jinja Main Hospital mortuary as investigations continue.

This incident echoes past occurrences where self-proclaimed religious figures engaged in nefarious activities. In December 2021, Pastor Joseph Sserubiri and his wife, Felista Namaganda of Deliverance and Healing Ministries Kakira, were convicted of sacrificing a 4-year-old child in an attempt to establish a powerful church.
