President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni emphasized the National Resistance Movement’s (NRM) commitment to employing a scientific approach to politics rather than relying on guesswork. He stated that the party aims to address the challenges faced by Ugandans effectively.

During a rally held at Tegony Primary School in Iceme Town Council, Oyam North, where he campaigned for Samuel Engola Okello Junior, the NRM flag bearer for the upcoming Oyam North Parliamentary By-election, President Museveni shared insights into the party’s principles. Okello Junior, the son of the late Col. (Rtd) Charles Engola Okello, former Member of Parliament and State Minister for Labour, Employment, and Industrial Relations, tragically killed earlier this year, seeks to continue his father’s legacy.

President Museveni emphasized that the NRM’s involvement in leadership stems from its ability to address societal issues effectively. He urged the electorate to evaluate leaders based on their capacity to bring about development rather than simply making promises. The President praised the visible infrastructure, such as roads and schools, as indicators of successful governance and highlighted the NRM’s commitment to building and sustaining peace.

Referencing the late Okello Engola’s dedication to peace, President Museveni stressed the importance of selecting leaders who can uphold and promote stability. He cautioned against solely focusing on development while neglecting other crucial aspects. The President also discussed the NRM’s efforts to combat poverty and promote wealth creation, emphasizing the importance of education and preventive healthcare measures.

Drawing parallels between Okello Junior and the disciples of Jesus, President Museveni lauded his potential to follow in his father’s footsteps. Okello Junior, accompanied by his wife Sharon, assured the electorate of his commitment to continuing his father’s work and providing strong representation in Parliament.

NRM Secretary General, Hon. Richard Todwong, expressed gratitude for the peaceful campaign period and informed the President that 900 members from the opposition Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) had defected to the NRM. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the NRM Secretariat and highlighted the support received from President Museveni.

The Oyam North Parliamentary By-election is scheduled for July 6, 2023, as the constituency seeks to elect its new representative following the passing of Col. (Rtd) Charles Engola.
