Data Debacle: The Tale of Airtel and MTN Uganda Cheating Customers

Wednesday, June 21, 2023

The cost of data usage in Uganda continues to increase, causing many customers to struggle with managing their expenses. While many telecom companies serve the Ugandan market, Airtel and MTN Uganda stand out for allegedly cheating their customers through fast depletion of data bundles.

Many customers have shared their grievances on social media and other forums, claiming that their data bundles were depleted within minutes or even seconds, far short of the expected usage time. In response, Airtel and MTN Uganda have dismissed these claims as untrue, attributing the issue to the customers’ own data mismanagement.

However, upon deeper investigation, it was found that the complaints were legitimate and not isolated incidents. This begs the question of how the two telecom giants are allegedly cheating customers in data usage.

The causes of these fast data depletions are multi-faceted. Some of the reasons include the auto-renewal feature that both Airtel and MTN Uganda utilize, sudden service disruptions, and the fact that these telcos charge multiple rates for the same data bundles. This creates confusion among customers as to how much data is being used and for what purposes.

It is also concerning that while other telecom companies have taken steps to address the issue of fast data depletion, Airtel and MTN Uganda appear to be dragging their feet. This lack of concern for their customers is unacceptable, not just for customers paying for a service, but also for the economic implications on the country as a whole.

To address this issue, there must be increased regulation from the government or an independent body. This regulation should require Airtel and MTN Uganda to provide clear and concise information about data usage, as well as offer refunds when users experience sudden data depletion. Additionally, customers require education on how to manage data effectively to get the most from their data bundle.

In conclusion, while the situation may seem hopeless, there is a way forward. The people of Uganda must unite and advocate for their rights as customers. It is past time for accountability from both the government and telecom companies to regulate this issue. The current situation is unacceptable and cannot be allowed to continue.
