John Chris Bakiza, the former director of Uganda’s Criminal Investigations Directorate, has passed away, according to reports. Bakiza, who was also a lawyer and previously a lecturer at the Law Development Centre (LDC), is said to have died on Friday night at Mulago National Referral Hospital in Kampala. The circumstances of his death remain unclear.

At the time of his reported passing, Bakiza held the roles of a constitutional law specialist and an external examiner at LDC. Asan Kasingye, a former Assistant Inspector General of Police, expressed his condolences on social media, recalling their time together and Bakiza’s contributions as an advocate of the High Court and a criminal law instructor at LDC.

Another individual replied to Kasingye’s post, acknowledging the enduring impact of Bakiza’s teachings on professional conduct at LDC and wishing him peace.

Bakiza’s career in the Police Force began in 1980 when he was among the first 26 graduate cadet officers. He subsequently served as the CID officer-in-charge at the Bank of Uganda for three years until 1990. In 1990, he was promoted to Assistant Commissioner of Police and tasked with heading the Directorate of Legal Services at the former Police headquarters in Kampala. His roles within the force included director of administration and finance from 1992 to 1996, director of operations, and director of CID headquarters in Kampala from 1997 to 1999. Bakiza retired in 2000 and established his private law firm, Bakiza and Company Advocates, where he served as a managing partner.

Bakiza’s tenure as the head of the police’s crime-fighting unit came to an end due to a public judicial inquiry, led by Justice Julia Sebutinde, investigating corruption within the Police Force.
