Denis Singahakye, the former Ntungamo District chairperson, has secured a victory in the elections to represent the convocation committee on the Kabale University Council. This election comes amidst calls for unity to propel the institution’s development forward.

In a closely contested race, Singahakye emerged as the leader of the convocation committee, triumphing over his opponent, former university guild president Robert Byamugisha Kakuru. The committee comprises both alumni and current staff of the university.

The electoral process took place at Kabale University campus in Kabale Town under the supervision of Uganda’s Electoral Commission officials, led by Louis Bamwanga. Singahakye clinched victory with 87 votes, while Byamugisha garnered 11 votes.

Additionally, Shantale Ngabire, former Kabale University liaison officer in Kigali, secured her position on the university senate, defeating her sole opponent, Henry Twesigye, with 67 votes to his 27.

Naris Tibenderana, the secretary of the Kabale University convocation committee, clarified that Ngabire replaces the late Rubanda District Chief Administrative Officer, while Singahakye is commencing his final term in office.

Tibenderana further elaborated that the elected representatives of the university council and senate are tasked with advocating for the interests of the convocation for the betterment of the university. Their term of office spans four years, renewable once through re-election.

Katabazi Bwengye, the deputy vice chancellor in charge of finance, alongside university secretary Baryantuma Munono, urged the convocation to maintain cohesion and contribute constructively towards the university’s progress.

Addressing both winners and losers of the election, Katabazi emphasized the importance of unity in fostering Kabale University’s development.

Isaiah Kanyamahane, chairman of the Kabale University convocation committee and Kamwenge Resident District Commissioner (RDC), urged the newly elected leaders to leverage social media platforms to attract prospective students and qualified academics, emphasizing the need to focus on substantial matters rather than trivial disputes.
