Four people were on Thursday killed in a crash along the Soroti-Mbale Road. The crash happened at Corner Cell in Bukedea Town Council, a few meters away from the Bukedea Police Check-point.

Oscar Gregg Ageca, the East Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman said that the taxi registration number UBH 695V in which they were traveling veered off the road and overturned several times. He attributed the accident to overspeeding.

According to Ageca, eight survivors were rushed to Bukedea Health Center IV in critical condition.

Ageca says that they are yet to establish the identities of the dead who include three men and one child.

In March, another Taxi accident claimed the lives of three people and left others injured after it overturned at Tamula along Mbale- Soroti highway in Bukedea district.

The WHO has ranked Uganda among the countries with the highest traffic death rates, estimated at 29 car deaths per 100,000 people.

Uganda registered a 16.9 percent increase in road accidents in 2022, a new police report said on Wednesday.

According to the Annual Crime Report 2022, the country registered 20,394 cases of road accidents in 2022 compared to 17,443 registered the previous year.

Out of every 100 crashes, 22 people died while 61 percent of all accidents were as a result of reckless driving, the police said.

To curb the accidents, the police said they had resorted to enforcement of traffic laws and regulations through targeted operations, targeting motorcycle taxis and other risk factors such as speeding, and drunk driving.
