Gen. Muhoozi Tightens Military Cooperation with Tanzania and Mali

KAMPALA, (Examiner) – Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, engaged in bilateral discussions on Wednesday, hosting a Tanzanian military delegation led by Maj Gen Marco Elisha Gaguti. The Tanzanian representatives conveyed regards and felicitations from General Jacob Mkunda, the Chief of Defence Forces of the Tanzanian People’s Defence Forces (TPDF). Talks at the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) Headquarters in Entebbe centered on fortifying the longstanding alliance between Uganda and Tanzania, with a focus on enhancing training opportunities for officers from both nations.

The recent finalization of a defense and security cooperation framework underscored the commitment to strengthening military relations. Additionally, both parties agreed to activate the intergovernmental security committee for the East African Crude Oil Pipeline project. Collaboration between Tanzania and Uganda has extended to information and intelligence sharing, countering various threats such as terrorism, arms and drug trafficking, wildlife crime, cybersecurity, illegal migration, and safeguarding critical infrastructure, including the crude oil pipeline, along with addressing emerging challenges like pandemics.

In attendance from the Tanzanian side were Lt Col Fred Jonas Moshi and Maj Abubakar Mwindadi, while from Uganda, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga, the Commander Land Forces, and Maj Gen BD Mugisha, the SFC Commander, participated in the discussions. Moreover, Gen Muhoozi met with Maj Gen Oumar Diarra, the Chief of General Staff of Mali, at the SFC headquarters, where both leaders affirmed their commitment to bolstering military cooperation and strengthening existing agreements between Uganda and Mali.

Gen Diarra extended a formal invitation to Gen Kainerugaba to visit Mali at his convenience. He also pledged to send additional officers and soldiers from Mali for training in Uganda, showcasing the deepening ties between the two nations.
