Summary:

KALIRO, (Examiner) – Ivan Makaye and his brother Gerald Magala are distraught after their local Member of Parliament allegedly scammed them out of several million shillings.

The brothers sold their properties, including land, sugarcane plantations, and small businesses, after Hon. Sanon Bwire Nadeba, the Bulamogi County lawmaker, promised lucrative job opportunities in Canada.

Residents of Kalalu village, Butegele parish in Kasokwe subcounty, the two brothers claim they are currently in hiding, fearing for their safety after reporting the incident to the police.

They allege that Hon. Bwire received 26 million shillings, some deposited in his Post Bank account, and some in cash.

A receipt from Post Bank Iganga branch, seen by Busoga Today, indicates that Gerald Magala deposited 5 million shillings into account number 1030027005054 (Bwire Sanon Nadeba) on February 27, 2023. This suggests that the brothers paid the money to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) member of Parliament.

“We have struggled with him since last year. He has made endless promises, leaving us without any money,” says Makaye to Examiner.

“He promised to take us in September last year, but we still haven’t seen a visa. We have waited enough and now want our money back,” he added.

Makaye says they reported the matter to Kaliro police but doubted they would get help. They later went to Entebbe police station with the help of their elder brother, who lives in the capital city.

At Kaliro police, they did not record any statements but lodged their petition on Reference number SD REF: 13/28/04/2024. At Entebbe CPS, their case was registered under SD REF: 75/09/05/2024 and SD REF: 73/09/05/2024 over the case O/M/F/P.

They allege that Hon. Bwire operates a purported labor company and that he uses his wife, identified only as Suzan, who allegedly works in State House, to make calls to them.

“We became suspicious and asked him the name of his labor company. He responded, ‘Are you a spy?’ That’s when we realized he wasn’t serious about taking us to Canada and was possibly trying to scam us,” said Makaye.

“Magala questioned him, but he insulted us. We tried to meet him at offices in Kampala, but we were wasting our transport. Banks are demanding payment, but he was unresponsive,” Makaye added.

The MP reportedly told the young men that the travel was known by the government and the Speaker of Parliament.

“We once went to Kampala to his place, planning to stay the whole week until our departure to Canada, but he sent us to his office. He stayed there until around 9 pm, and security sent us away. We had no money and walked to Kireka to the lodge where we were staying. We returned to Kaliro after a good Samaritan helped us with transport,” Makaye stated.

Hon. Bwire does not deny knowing the boys and says mediations are underway to resolve the issue.

Reports indicate that he is mediating with the two young men through the Bugiri Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Kalikwani Makakanyara.

They (Bwire and RDC) invited the brothers to a hotel in Ntinda where Bwire paid 14 million shillings. Makaye said they were promised the balance and their passports in June.
