Martin Ochola concluded his six-year tenure as the head of the Uganda Police Force today, handing over his duties to his deputy, Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime. Prior to his departure, Ochola convened a meeting with directors at the police headquarters in Naguru, where he bid farewell to his colleagues.

Addressing the directors, Ochola acknowledged that not all institutional challenges could be resolved during his six-year term. He highlighted unresolved issues hindering professional policing in a handover report, emphasizing the importance of addressing them under the new administration.

Having served the police force for 36 years since joining on January 2, 1988, Ochola assumed the role of Inspector General of Police (IGP) on March 4, 2018, succeeding Gen Edward Kale Kayihura. Throughout his tenure, Ochola held various positions within the force, including deputy to Gen Kayihura, Director of Special Duties, Director of CID, Deputy Director of CID, Commissioner of the Legal Department, Head of the Complaints Desk, Head of Prosecution, and OC of Entebbe Aviation Security.

Reflecting on his appointment, Ochola expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve as the Inspector General of Police, a position extended to him by the President for an additional three years beyond his initial term.

During his tenure, Ochola oversaw the recruitment of 12,500 police constables and over 1000 Learner Assistant Inspectors of Police (LAIP). He also completed projects initiated by Gen Kayihura, including the construction of 360 police housing units and the establishment of the National CCTV Command Centre.

Additionally, Ochola conducted promotional exercises for both senior and junior police officers, elevating five Senior Commissioners of Police (SCP) to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP). These promotions contribute to the pool of 13 AIGPs, one of whom may succeed Ochola.

In his parting words, Ochola expressed gratitude for the achievements made during his tenure and wished the Uganda Police Force continued success under new leadership. He formally submitted his retirement request to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, citing personal and domestic obligations.

In conclusion, Ochola handed over leadership to his successor, expressing confidence in the future of the institution and its commitment to upholding law and order.
