Janet Kataha Museveni, Uganda’s Minister of Education and Sports, has been appointed as the patron of the iLead program in Ugandan schools. This appointment follows the program’s launch in Uganda by the Maxwell Leaders, aimed at fostering selfless leadership skills among students.

The iLead Program, developed by the Maxwell Leadership Foundation, focuses on instilling values-based leadership competencies in young learners. Designed by renowned leadership expert John Maxwell, the program utilizes a peer-to-peer learning approach to enable students to practice leadership skills while learning them.

“We are honored and privileged to bring this program to our country,” remarked the First Lady at the State House in Nakasero. She expressed gratitude for the opportunity to introduce such a transformative initiative personally.

Currently piloted in 13 schools across Uganda, including St. Maria Goretti Senior Secondary School in Katende, the iLead program is administered by the Franklin Institute. Over 2,000 schools in Uganda are expected to benefit from this initiative.

Shallon Mugabe, a certified Maxwell coach and trainer, highlighted the program’s impact on students, emphasizing values such as integrity, timeliness, and the importance of self-accountability. “Leadership begins with self,” she noted, underscoring the program’s role in preparing students for broader life challenges beyond the curriculum.

Educators have lauded the iLead Program’s potential, advocating for its integration into the national curriculum. Edward Kanoonya, headteacher of Kololo Senior Secondary School, praised its holistic approach in enhancing students’ communication skills and decision-making abilities.

Margret Kyambadde, headteacher of St. Maria Goretti Senior Secondary School, echoed these sentiments, applauding the program for promoting positivity and commitment among learners.

The iLead Program aims to equip Uganda’s youth with essential leadership qualities, ensuring they become effective leaders in their future endeavors. As the program expands, its impact on shaping a new generation of leaders in Uganda continues to grow.
