Summary:

  • The Kagadi District Forest and Environmental Conservation Task Force, with the support of the Resident District Officer, is taking action to evict encroachers from the endangered Rwabituju Wetland in Uganda. Community members have illegally farmed on the wetland, leading to approximately 25 acres being depleted.

The Kagadi District Forest and Environmental Conservation Task Force, in collaboration with the Office of the Resident District Officer (RDC), has initiated a campaign to evict encroachers from the endangered Rwabituju Wetland.

Situated within the boundaries of Nyankubebe A & B, Katikara, Kisaara B villages, all in Nyamasa Parish, Bwikara Sub county, Rwabituju Wetland spans approximately 25 acres. A recent survey indicates that community members have encroached upon the wetland, engaging in activities such as farming onions, sugarcane, beans, and cabbages.

In response to this encroachment, Kagadi RDC Lillian Ruteraho states that her team will collaborate with the local council chairpersons of the neighboring villages to compile a list of encroachers for apprehension and legal action.

Lillian Ruteraho emphasizes the need for cooperation in addressing the issue, while Benjamin Tumusiime, the Kagadi Deputy Resident District Commissioner, discloses that 70% of the district’s wetlands have already been depleted. He urges leaders at all levels to support efforts to restore these crucial ecosystems.

Moreover, Kagadi District Senior Environment Officer Robert Byoona notes a surge in encroachment on Rwabituju Wetland and other swamps in the district, particularly following the lockdown induced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Byoona advises that anyone intending to undertake activities in the wetland must seek approval from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) through an environmental impact assessment and clearance process.
