The people of Lango want the number of MPs reduced to save tax payers money.
This is contained in a report released by Lango Civil Society Network -LACSON from a survey conducted in Lira, Alebtong and Dokolodistrictwhere most people in Lango called for reduction in number of legislators to save money for other developments.
Under Strengthening Citizens’ Engagement in Elections (SCENE) project, LACSON consulted people in Dokolo, Alebtong and Lira district on issues around elections and the findings were released before leaders of Lango at a meeting held at Gracious Palace hotel-Lira city.
Locals came out with 13 proposals which include; formulating a law on the number of times an MP should contest, age limit for politicians to run for leadership positions, reducing the number of MPs to two per district, that is male and female, and electoral commission officials should not be appointed by the president.
Others are; strengthening mobilization of electorate to participate in elections, having in place a requirement of minimum academic qualification for all leadership positions.
Lira City returning officer, Hasakye Rashid welcomed the proposals for implementation.
Amolatar district councilor Nam Eve Tyan said politicians should be allowed to serve for three terms consecutively to give them ample time to implement different projects.
Ojwang Opota, prime minister of Tekwaro Lango said having many MPs is affecting their performance, calling for a reduction in the number of legislators.
Apac District speaker, Obong Acuda said there was no need for special interest groups’ representation in parliament since the laws formulated by parliament benefits everyone.
The chairperson Lira district disability council Mandu Edward said there is need to maintain youths and PWDs representatives in parliament but the army and workers MPs positions should be scrapped off.
Executive director of LACSON Dickens Ogwal said the proposals will be forewarned to parliament for approval.
