KAMPALA, (Examiner) – Minister for Energy and Mineral Development, Ruth Nankabirwa has been named Laity Canon along with financial expert Vivian Igundura and Naboth Muhairwe, a renowned lawyer.
Archbishop of the Church of Uganda Dr Stephen Kaziimba Mugalu announced the three at the 15th Kampala Diocesan Synod Meeting held at the Cathedral Thursday.
The three, picked from the House of Laity, will assume the title “Lay Canon” after they are installed.
In 2021, Dr Kaziimba assigned Nankabirwa a duty to “represent the Church in the cabinet of Uganda” to enhance cooperation between the church and the state.
Vivian Igundura, who is now Canon in Charge of Finance and Investment has been Chairperson All Saints Cathedral Building Project, the committee which is in church of the construction of the new church building at at Nakasero, Kampala.
She is also the Country Director 80-Twenty Consulting International, a global financial consultancy, and formerly worked as Head Customer Services at Barclays Bank Uganda, now Absa.
Naboth Muhairwe, the Managing Partner Agaba Muhairwe & Co Advocates and Provincial Chancellor of the Church of Uganda was named Canon in Charge of Canon Law.
The Archbishop also named three clergy Canons with different responsibilities, according to Ivan Aijuka, the head of communication at All Saints.
Rev. David Serwada Ssalongo will be Canon in Charge of Pastoral Care Ministry, while Rev Captain David Serunjogi is Canon in charge of Mission and Discipleship. The Rev Dr. Grace Rubale was named Canon in Charge of Education and Training.
The Archbishop also congratulated the Diocese of Kampala for making a big stride in making sure that the Church House loan was paid.
The Archbishop also reminded the members about the retirement of the Assistant bishop, Kampala, Rt. Rev Dr. Hannington Mutebi which is at the end of this year.
Synod is the supreme governing body of the Diocese. It is composed of representatives from the parishes who form the House of Laity and a House of Clergy.
The title of Canon is the highest honour conferred upon a lay christian in the church of Uganda, for their previous commitment to serving the faith.
