Ntungamo Police Officer Loses Fingers During Domestic Altercation With Suspect

NTUNGAMO, (Examiner) – Ntungamo police are probing a disturbing incident where a suspect involved in a domestic dispute reportedly severed two fingers of the officer overseeing the Rwashamaire police station as law enforcement sought to apprehend him.

Mr. Rogers Wamono found himself in the line of fire when a machete, hurled by the suspect, struck his hand during the attempt to arrest the individual at Kiyaga village, Nkongoro parish, Nyabihoko Sub County. Recounting the ordeal, Mr. Wamono told Examiner that he and fellow officers entered the residence where the suspect had taken refuge.

“The suspect engaged in a brawl at a local bar, resulting from a dispute over a romantic entanglement. When matters escalated, we were summoned. Upon arrival, the suspect fled, seeking refuge in a nearby house. Despite our efforts to apprehend him peacefully, he launched a machete at us, causing my injury,” Mr. Wamono conveyed from Mulago Hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.

Witnesses at the scene informed Examiner that prior to the police intervention, the suspect had inflicted injuries on two individuals using the same weapon. “He was out of control. Police were called in to restore order. Upon our arrival, he retreated to his house and, as officers entered, he attacked, resulting in the injury to the Station OC’s fingers,” recounted Mr. Mwesigwa Joseph, a local resident.

Mr. Wamono sustained severe injuries, with his ring finger completely severed and only a tissue holding his smallest finger. The other two fingers sustained significant damage. Ntungamo District Police Commander, Mr. Hannington Bushaija, confirmed the suspect’s arrest and assured that investigations are underway.

“We commend the restraint shown by our officers during the arrest, refraining from any use of excessive force. The suspect is now in custody as we conduct thorough investigations, including an assessment of his mental state,” added Mr. Bushaija.

Mr. Wamono continues to receive medical care at Mulago National Referral Hospital after initial treatment at Divine Clinic Rwashamaire.
