Summary:

  • The National Unity Platform criticizes Mathias Mpuuga’s refusal to step down as Parliament Commissioner, alleging influence from the Speaker. Mpuuga denies wrongdoing. Speaker clarifies NUP’s lack of authority to recall Mpuuga.

The National Unity Platform (NUP) party has criticized Mr. Mathias Mpuuga’s refusal to heed the party’s request to step down as the Commissioner of Parliament, alleging that he is being influenced by Speaker Ms. Anita Among.

Mr. Waiswa Mufumbiro, the NUP deputy spokesperson, expressed this sentiment to the press on Tuesday, asserting that the embattled Nyendo-Mukungwe legislator has compromised the party’s stance by collaborating with the ‘dictator’ and engaging in corrupt practices. He accused Mr. Mpuuga of aligning himself with Ms. Among, insinuating that his recent decisions stem from undue influence, possibly due to alleged bribery.

Mufumbiro emphasized the party’s position, stating that if Mr. Mpuuga claims to be a member, he should adhere to the party’s directives. Failure to comply may lead to further action within the confines of the law.

These remarks coincide with Mr. Mpuuga’s assertion that he remains committed to NUP and will not resign from his position in the Parliamentary Commission. He reiterated his dedication to the party and denied any wrongdoing, challenging those who accuse him of corruption to provide evidence.

Mr. Mpuuga also criticized NUP leadership for what he perceives as a lack of engagement with significant issues such as the recent appointments within the military and the reappointment of Electoral Commissioners implicated in electoral malpractice.

However, NUP’s stance remains firm, with Mufumbiro asserting that the party has not planned to remove Mr. Mpuuga, urging him to address concerns regarding a purported 500 million shilling ‘service award’ received under questionable circumstances.

Examiner understands that Speaker Ms. Among clarified that NUP lacks the authority to recall Mr. Mpuuga from the Parliamentary Commission. She cited legal limitations on the party’s role in nominating candidates for such positions, as outlined in parliamentary procedures and legislation.

Ms. Among’s response to NUP’s request emphasized the legal constraints and potential consequences of overriding parliamentary procedures, highlighting a precedent set by a Constitutional Court decision.

The dispute surrounding Mr. Mpuuga’s position within NUP and the Parliamentary Commission reflects broader tensions within the party, exacerbated by legal and procedural complexities.
