Pastor, Three Others Detained for Census Sabotage in Mityana

MITYANA, (Examiner) – Four individuals, including a pastor, were arrested by Mityana police for disrupting the national population census at Naama Central in Busimbi division, Mityana municipality.

The incident occurred on Thursday, May 16, 2024, when an enumerator attempted to count Pastor Samuel Kalibbala and others at his church. They were prevented from doing so, leading to a standoff.

Regional Police Spokesperson Rachael Kawala confirmed the arrests, stating that the pastor and his associates locked themselves in the church in protest, which led to their detention.

Earlier this week, police in Wobulenzi Town Council, Luwero District, arrested a man claiming to be Jesus and his followers for refusing to participate in the ongoing National Housing and Population Census (NHPC).

Daniel Kikonyogo, the Local Council 1 chairperson, reported that Jesus Navas Vera, who leads the King of Star Glopper Eden Church, and his followers went into hiding when enumerators arrived.

His followers declared they did not believe in the census.

Luwero District Police Commander John Ojokuna stated that the self-styled Jesus refused to be counted, and he now faces charges for defying a government program under the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Act.

In Kamira Sub County, Luwero, over 100 families affiliated with the Enjiri cult also refused to be counted, claiming the census was satanic.

Jesus Navas Vera appeared in court on Thursday to face charges.
