Summary:

  • Police are facing increased violence, prompting closures of several upcountry posts due to attacks and assaults on officers across various districts.

KAMPALA, (Examiner) – Law enforcement agencies across the country are grappling with a surge in violence directed at police officers, prompting closures of several upcountry police posts. According to police spokesperson Fred Enanga, incidents of obstruction, assaults on officers, and acts of lawlessness have reached critical levels.

Enanga highlighted several alarming incidents during a press briefing, including attacks on police posts, resistance during arrests, and instances of mob justice targeting officers. Among the most severe cases was an assault on officers Godfrey Obongi and Mulani Ngobi in Kamuli district, who were beaten by a mob after seeking refuge for a stranded police motorcycle.

“In another troubling incident,” Enanga continued, “eight suspects have been arrested for attempted murder of a policeman and a Parish Intelligence Officer.”

Further escalating the situation, a violent confrontation in Paidha District resulted in a suspect sustaining a gunshot wound while attempting to disarm a police officer. The suspect, identified only as Derrick, had allegedly orchestrated a group to attack the police station.

“In response to these escalating threats,” Enanga stated, “we have been forced to close a police post in Kole District following an assault by residents during an attempted detainment.”

Additionally, detectives in Otuke District are pursuing a former convict, Ochan, accused of stabbing Officer Alfred Awuye in an attempted gun theft.

Enanga concluded by urging the public to cooperate with law enforcement rather than resorting to violence. “These closures are necessary to ensure the safety of our officers,” he emphasized. “We are here to uphold the law, not to be met with aggression.”
