  • Resident District and City Commissioners (RCCs) are tasked with ensuring the safety of personnel and equipment for Uganda’s upcoming National Population and Housing Census in May. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) is coordinating preparations, including digital mapping, to streamline data collection.

Resident District and City Commissioners (RCCs) have been tasked with facilitating the smooth execution of the forthcoming National Population and Housing Census, alongside ongoing preparatory endeavors for the May event.

On Monday, leaders of the District Security Committees, including the RDCs and RCCs, were urged to ensure the comprehensive protection of census personnel and equipment for the next two months.

Dr. Chris Mukiza, the Executive Director of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), issued this plea during the launch of census household listing and mapping activities in Wakiso District on Monday.

Addressing officials in Wakiso District, Mukiza emphasized, “As district security heads, you bear the responsibility for safeguarding census equipment and personnel, as well as implementing activities at the grassroots level.”

Prior to this, Mukiza met with Wakiso district chairman, Mr. Matia Lwanga Bwanika, urging him to assume full responsibility for census activities in the district.

Across the nation, UBOS has engaged Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) and Town Clerks to actively prepare their communities for the impending national census commencing in early May.

UBOS has decentralized activities by establishing census committees at various levels, from district down to village.

Utilizing digital mapping tools, UBOS officials are creating an interactive map crucial for census enumeration, precisely locating households and their designated heads to enhance the data collection process.

UBOS encourages Ugandans to embrace preparatory activities and participate actively in the forthcoming census, scheduled from May 9 to May 19, 2024.

Uganda conducts a national census every decade, with the last one in 2014. Census figures play a pivotal role in informing planning, policy formulation, program implementation, and monitoring development progress aligned with national objectives.
