Summary:

  • Three MPs, including Bunyole East MP Yusuf Mutembuli, are facing corruption charges at the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala over an alleged budget scandal involving Parliament and the Finance Ministry.

Bunyole East MP Yusuf Mutembuli, along with his counterparts Busiki MP Paul Akamba and Lwengo District Woman MP Cissy Dionizia Namujju, were escorted to the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala today. They stood before Chief Magistrate Joan Aciro to face formal charges related to an alleged corruption scandal involving the Parliament and Finance Ministry’s budgetary affairs.

The trio, transported in a police van, arrived at the court premises in Nakasero, opposite the Health Ministry, around 2:45 pm. They are accused, as per the charge sheet, of a single count of corruption. It’s alleged that on May 13, 2024, at Hotel Africana in Kampala, they solicited an undue advantage of 20% of the anticipated budget increment for the Uganda Human Rights Commission from Ms. Mariam Wangadya, the commission’s chairperson.

These allegations stem from purported involvement in influencing the Budget Committee of Parliament to increase the Commission’s budget for the 2024/2025 fiscal year in exchange for the aforementioned advantage.

The MPs have been under police custody since June 10, following summons to the Criminal Investigations Department in Kampala. President Yoweri Museveni, in his State of the Nation Address on June 6, vowed to take action against MPs and Ministry of Finance officials implicated in budgetary corruption.
