Tragic building collapse in Lira City leaves two dead and 10 injured

Wednesday, June 7, 2023

It’s truly devastating to hear that two individuals lost their lives and ten others were injured due to a building collapse at a guesthouse in Lira City.

The police have identified the victims as Justine Olel, 55, and Isaac Ilem who were porters at the construction site of Peacock guest house.

According to North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the unfortunate incident occurred when debris from the construction site collapsed, burying the two deceased under it.

Emergency personnel had to use an excavator to retrieve their bodies. The ten guesthouse staff who survived the collapse have been admitted to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for medical treatment. Meanwhile, the deceased bodies have been transferred to Lira Hospital morgue for postmortem examinations.

The authorities are yet to get a statement from the building’s owner and confirm whether it had approvals from the city engineering team for the construction. It’s concerning to hear that a similar incident occurred in the same area just a few months ago, raising questions regarding safety measures and approval processes for buildings being constructed in the city. Lira City Mayor, Mr Sam Atul, emphasized that a property like this should have obtained clearance from the engineering department of Lira City council.

The authorities are still investigating the cause of the collapse, including whether the construction site was legal or not.
