In a bid to tackle youth unemployment and teenage pregnancies exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Uganda Baati has rolled out a transformative initiative. Under the Safal Uganda Baati Foundation, the company has introduced a youth empowerment skilling program aimed at equipping over 500 young individuals in Tororo with entrepreneurial skills.

Tororo District, home to approximately 373,317 youths aged 15-30, has seen alarming rates of 62% youth unemployment and 29.5% teenage pregnancies since the onset of the pandemic. In response, Uganda Baati’s program, known as the Basic Economic Empowerment Skilling Programme, seeks to turn young people into job creators by imparting practical skills directly applicable to the local economy.

George Mubiru, Manager of Safal Uganda Baati Foundation, emphasized the program’s holistic approach, which integrates technical training with essential life skills and business knowledge. This comprehensive curriculum includes sessions on sexual reproductive health, financial literacy, and business management, preparing participants aged 14-25 to thrive independently.

The initiative, launched in May, spans six months and is divided into three phases focusing on marketable trades such as Backyard Gardening, Fundi Roofing Skilling, Liquid Detergent Making, and Hairdressing. Currently engaging 146 participants, the program is tailored to accommodate teenage parents and aims to benefit over 500 youths by its conclusion.

As Uganda Baati progresses towards establishing the Safal Uganda Baati Foundation Technical Vocational Institute in Tororo, this initiative marks a significant stride towards sustainable development and economic empowerment for the region’s youth.
