KAMPALA, (Examiner) – Uganda kicked off a two-day East Africa Carbon Markets Forum 2024 at the Kampala Serena Hotel, focusing on fostering a win-win bilateral partnership. The event gathers regional stakeholders to deliberate on carbon markets’ future and sustainable development in East Africa.

The forum aims to identify opportunities and hurdles in the region’s climate finance landscape, discussing strategies for achieving net-zero emissions. It will also showcase innovative climate action projects in East Africa, highlighting the region’s potential for sustainable growth.

Beatrice Anywar Atim, Minister of State for Water and Environment, emphasized the importance of turning the Paris Agreement’s Article 6 framework into actionable steps. She highlighted Uganda’s readiness, citing the National Climate Change Policy, Nationally Determined Contribution, and efforts by the National Forest Authority to preserve forests.

Dr. Brian Isabirye, Commissioner of Renewable Energy at the Ministry of Energy, highlighted Uganda’s efforts in creating an enabling environment for carbon markets, including establishing the Uganda Carbon Credit Scheme. He noted significant investments in renewable energy, aiming for an 80% share by 2030, aligned with the Paris Agreement’s goals.

Margaret Athieno Mwebesa, Commissioner for Climate Change at the Ministry of Water and Environment, emphasized Uganda’s vulnerability to climate change but also its proactive role in mitigation and adaptation. She highlighted efforts in renewable energy, sustainable land management, and the Green Growth Strategy aimed at fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
