Uganda today commemorates the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons. This day, designated by the United Nations General Assembly, aims to raise awareness about human trafficking and encourage public action against this egregious violation of individual rights.
Basalirwa Kigenyi, the Deputy National Coordinator at the National Coordination Office for Prevention of Trafficking in Persons, Ministry of Internal Affairs, announced that national celebrations will be held at Kololo Secondary School in Kampala. The event will begin with a march under the theme, “Leave No Child Behind in the Fight Against Trafficking in Persons.”
Kigenyi emphasized the importance of this year’s theme, highlighting that globally, up to a third of trafficking victims are children. “In Uganda, our counter-trafficking report indicates that 50.69% of cases and victims were children,” Kigenyi said.
