KAMPALA, (Examiner) – The Uganda Police Force has initiated an extensive security campaign aimed at safeguarding the thousands of pilgrims journeying on foot to Namugongo, a revered Christian site in Uganda.

These pilgrims, hailing from neighboring nations and various regions within Uganda, anticipate spending several days traversing the lengthy pilgrimage route, a spiritual endeavor aimed at reaffirming their beliefs and commemorating the Uganda Martyrs.

SCP Enanga Fred, the Police Spokesperson, has disclosed that a specialized team has been deployed to furnish security and traffic assistance to the pilgrims as they traverse multiple regions and districts. Additionally, the police will furnish medical aid and swift response services to any pilgrims in need.

Initiated on May 15, 2024, the security operation has already provided escort to over 724 pilgrims from Nebbi Catholic Diocese and those from Lango Diocese, who commenced their journey on May 18, 2024.

Collaborating closely with Catholic and Protestant Dioceses, the police have disseminated safety directives to all foot pilgrims.

SCP Enanga Fred emphasized, “Our commitment is unwavering in ensuring the safety and security of all pilgrims en route to Namugongo. We urge pilgrims to adhere to safety protocols, including staying with their groups, carrying essential items like identification cards, mobile phones, chargers, light baggage, and reflective gear, while avoiding travel during nighttime.”

Ambulances have been strategically stationed along major highways for medical emergencies.

The public is encouraged to report any security concerns to the National Operations Command Centre at Police Headquarters via designated contact numbers.

Amidst the ongoing pilgrimage, motorists are urged to exercise caution and patience when encountering pilgrims on the roads. “We implore motorists to slow down and yield to pilgrims, recognizing their status as vulnerable road users,” SCP Enanga Fred emphasized.

The police extend their well-wishes to all pilgrims for a safe and spiritually enriching journey to Namugongo as they fulfill their religious obligations.
