Uganda’s Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, has called on the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gen Jeje Odongo, to address allegations regarding the transformation of Uganda’s consulate in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) into a casino.
This follows a series of media reports implicating the minister in the alleged covert conversion of the consulate building into a gambling establishment. The issue was raised in Parliament on Thursday, August 1, 2024, by Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister, Hon. Muwada Nkunyingi, who highlighted the potential international ramifications if the matter is not investigated.
“Parliament advocated for this consulate to provide support and services to the thousands of Ugandans living in Dubai. Turning the consulate into a casino contravenes UAE laws, our laws, and international laws governing diplomatic premises,” Nkunyingi stated.
The Kyadondo East Legislator emphasized the need for the consulate to be managed in accordance with the law and called for clarification on the disciplinary, diplomatic, and administrative actions taken to address the situation.
In response, Prime Minister Robinah Nabanjja directed that the matter be handled by the Minister of Foreign Affairs. “The Minister in question is also an MP. Since a statement has been requested, I will ensure he comes here to address the matter,” Nabanjja assured.
Deputy Speaker Tayebwa announced that the Minister will be required to appear before Parliament on Tuesday. “Next Tuesday, we shall have the Minister on schedule to provide a statement,” Tayebwa confirmed.
