UPDF Major Killed in Three-Car Crash near Mabira

A tragic accident occurred at Sanga-Mabira along the Kampala-Jinja Highway in Buikwe District, resulting in the death of a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Major. Major Habib Nsamba Katakabire, aged 54, was driving a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 from Kampala towards Jinja when the incident transpired.

The collision involved three vehicles: the aforementioned Toyota Land Cruiser V8, a Howo Trailer, and a Toyota Corona Premio.

SP Butoto Hellen, the spokesperson for the Ssezibwa regional police, confirmed the identity of the deceased. Major Katakabire’s vehicle collided with a Howo Trailer while attempting to overtake other vehicles. The impact caused his vehicle to overturn, subsequently striking a Toyota Corona Premio.

Both Major Katakabire and the driver of the Howo Trailer, Muhammad Kasozi, died at the scene. However, PC Isaac Kayondo, the driver of the Toyota Corona Premio and a police officer attached to Bweyogerere, sustained injuries and was promptly transported to Kawolo Hospital for medical attention.

The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the mortuary at Kawolo Hospital for postmortem examinations. Meanwhile, the damaged vehicles have been relocated to Mabira police station pending inspection by the Inspectorate of Vehicles (IOV).

Police investigations have indicated that the accident was caused by reckless overtaking by Major Katakabire. Inquiries into the incident are ongoing.
