A 38-year-old male nurse is facing charges of rape after allegedly engaging in non-consensual sexual intercourse with a 7-month pregnant woman in Rukiga District. The individual in question, Darius Orikiriza, works as a male enrolled nurse and a sonographer at Mparo Health Centre IV. He was apprehended on Monday and presented before Kabale’s chief magistrate, Mr. Derick Byamugisha.
During the court session held on Friday, the state prosecution, led by Julie Najjunju, contended that Orikiriza had engaged in sexual intercourse with an adult woman without her consent. Due to the gravity of the offense, which falls within the category of capital crimes, the accused was not permitted to enter a plea within this jurisdiction and instead, the case will be transferred to the High Court. Subsequently, Orikiriza was detained at Ndorwa government prison located in Kabale town.
According to the prosecution’s account, on August 21, 2023, at around 1:30 pm, Orikiriza allegedly coerced the victim, a 20-year-old woman who was 7 months pregnant, into a sexual act when she had come to Mparo Health Centre IV for a medical examination and scan. Promptly, the victim reported the incident to the facility’s supervisor, who then notified the police, culminating in Orikiriza’s arrest.
Following the advice of the Kabale chief magistrate, the accused must now seek bail from the High Court of Uganda. This case underscores the severe nature of the allegations of sexual assault and underscores the significance of adhering to proper legal procedures in addressing such matters.
