Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | George William Nyombi Thembo, the former Minister of State for ICT, has been appointed as the new Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC). Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the current Minister of ICT and National Guidance, confirmed Nyombi in this role, entrusting him with the responsibility of leading the national communications regulator for the next five years.

Nyombi, 59, will succeed Eng Irene Kaggwa Ssewankambo, who served as the acting ED for three years since replacing Eng Godfrey Mutabazi in February 2020. Nyombi, who joined UCC in 2016 after leaving parliament and the cabinet, previously held the position of director in charge of the Uganda Communications Universal Services Access Fund (UCUSAF), formerly known as the Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF).

Having emerged as the successful candidate from a pool of about 70 applicants, Nyombi’s appointment marks a significant transition in UCC leadership. Notable individuals who applied for the position included the incumbent ED, Eng. Irene Kaggwa, who will now retain her position as Director for Engineering and Communication Infrastructure, along with other candidates such as Fred Otunnu, the Director of Corporate Affairs at UCC, and Ms. Julianne Mweheire, Director of Industry Affairs and Content Development at the commission.
