Police Suspends NUP Mobilisation Activities

Wednesday, September 13, 2023

The Uganda Police Force has invoked Section 32(1) of the Penal Code Act to suspend the National Unity Platform Party mobilisation activities until further notice.

According to a press statement dated September 13th 2023 and signed by the Deputy Inspector of Police Maj Gen Tumusiime Katsigazi, the suspension came up after the security established that NUP had breached the guidelines put in place to enable them conduct their mobilisation activities across the country.

According to the statement, the Police indicated that National Unity Platform had been asked under the law to conduct mobilisation activities and open party offices with clear guidelines which included getting permission from venue owners, gathering in town halls or appropriate enclosed areas, prohibition of procession and avoiding inciting violence.

Maj Gen Tumusiime Katsigazi however noted that these guidelines have been breached and ignored by the National Unity Platform leadership which has prompted the Police to act.

He also noted that while at Kasana in Luwero, the President of National Unity Platform used the mobilisation activity to incite violence, promoted sectarianism, made illegitimate calls for the removal of an elected government and issuance of defamatory statements against the name of President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.

It’s from this backdrop that the Deputy Inspector General of Police directed that all NUP mobilisation activities have been immediately suspended until the time they are ready to comply with guidelines and rule of law.
