Ntungamo District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Ivan Asiimwe, the General Secretary of the Uganda Cooperative Alliance (UCA), has emphasized that Ugandans’ poverty is a mindset issue. He explained that the root cause of poverty is a lack of cooperation and strongly advocated for the establishment of cooperatives, aligning with President Yoweri Museveni’s call to all Ugandans. This statement was made during a one-day mobilization and training workshop for members of the Kajara People’s Cooperative Savings and Credit Society LTD (KAPSACCO) at the main branch in Rwashamaire, Rwamugyenyi Heritage Hotel, Kajara County, Ntungamo District, held on a Saturday.

Asiimwe encouraged all members of Kajara People’s Sacco across its four branches in Ntungamo Municipality, Kafunjo-Mirama Town council, Omukiyenje-Kyafoora, and Rwashamaire to consistently save their money. He emphasized that these savings would contribute to the development and expansion of the SACCO, ultimately leading to the eradication of poverty.

Asiimwe also urged every member to designate a next of kin responsible for their money in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

Geoffrey Nyakatukura, the Ntungamo District commercial officer, recommended that people join Kajara People’s Sacco as a means of avoiding exploitation by money lenders, commonly known as “Kafuna.” He highlighted the lenders’ tendency to overcharge individuals and seize their assets, including land.

DCO Nyakatukura praised Gen Jim Wills Byarugaba, the chairman of the Board of Directors, as well as the staff and members of the SACCO. He challenged them to increase their shares, savings, and loan participation to facilitate the expansion of the SACCO into a bank.

Gen Jim Wills Byarugaba, the chairman of the Board of Directors of Kajara People’s Cooperative Savings and Credit Society LTD (KAPSACCO), urged all founding members and others to encourage their children to join the SACCO. This move would strengthen it for future generations. Gen Byarugaba, who is also the director of Rwamugyenyi Heritage Hotel in Rwashamaire, expressed his gratitude to the members and staff for their cooperation, which has led to the SACCO’s success.

Benon Musinguzi, the supervisor of SACCOs in Western Uganda, commended the board for revitalizing Kajara SACCO and urged all members to enhance their savings habits, aiming for at least UGX 500 in daily savings.

Yusufu Akamukwatsa, the General Manager of Kajara SACCO, revealed that the SACCO has more than 5,600 members, a loan portfolio of UGX 1.8 billion, and savings amounting to UGX 3 billion. He also pointed out that they still face challenges related to dormant member accounts and loan defaulters.

The gathering also included the District internal auditor Kwesigamukama Ezra, Elliott Kabangira Magande, the General Manager of Radio Ankole, and Rev. Canon Charles Kapson, among others.
