Rukungiri man handed a 60-year prison sentence over manslaughter

Rukungiri District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | This week, the Rukungiri High Court, under the jurisdiction of Resident Judge Justice Tom Chemutai, issued a 60-year prison sentence to Karigye Yonah, 38, also known as Mukiga, for manslaughter.

Karigye, hailing from Kanungu District, was convicted on October 25th, 2021, in relation to the manslaughter case involving a 2-year-old whose identity is protected due to her age.

The now 4-year-old victim is the daughter of Kiconco Rabbeca, a resident of Rwankoma Cell, Kebisoni Sub County, Rukungiri District. At the time of the incident, the family was residing in Kakinga Cell, Rwakirungura Parish, Buyanja Sub County in Rukungiri District, where Mukiga worked as a casual laborer in the household of the late Nahurira Alex for a substantial period.

According to the prosecution’s findings, on the morning of October 25, 2021, in Kakinga Cell, Rwakirungura Parish, Buyanja Sub County, Rukungiri District, Kiconco left her two daughters sleeping. Upon her return, she discovered that the victim was missing.

In her efforts to locate her daughter, Kiconco heard a disturbance near the late Nahurira Alex’s family. Upon investigation, they found blood, and the victim was discovered critically injured, wrapped in polythene bags in a banana plantation, with her private parts mutilated.

Karigye Yonah, also known as Mukiga, was promptly apprehended, and the victim was rushed to Karoli Lwanga Hospital Nyakibale, later referred to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital, where she spent over three months in critical condition. Although she has since recovered, the victim continues to face challenges due to the trauma inflicted on her private parts.

The mother of the victim disclosed that her daughter has been advised to seek further medical treatment in India.

Driven by the enduring trauma inflicted on the innocent girl by Karigye Yonah alias Mukiga, Justice Tom Chemutai sentenced him to 60 years in prison for the heinous crime.
