Rukungiri District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Police and authorities in Rukungiri District are currently investigating the tragic demise of John Tukamuhabwa, a 20-year-old resident of Omukazagiro cell in Katoonya parish, Nyakishenyi sub-county.
Based on a police statement dated 29/09/2023, an incident occurred around 10:00 PM at Omukagaana trading center in Kahama cell, Murama parish. It all began with a dispute at a bar owned by Kamani, involving the deceased and his associates, which revolved around a female waiter. This dispute escalated into a physical altercation, leading Tukamuhabwa to leave the premises.
While on his way home, Tukamuhabwa was reportedly pursued and apprehended by his colleagues, including Kamani and some of his employees. They allegedly subjected him to severe physical assault, and this brutality continued with the involvement of Burungi Robert, who is the area chairperson of the trading center. Tukamuhabwa was ultimately left stranded after being robbed of his belongings.
Fortunately, Tukamuhabwa’s mother, Evelyn Kenganzi, came to his rescue when she found him in critical condition on his way home. He was rushed to Nyakishenyi Community Health Center and later transferred to Kabale Referral Hospital. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries on 02/10/2023.
Elly Maate, the spokesperson for Kigezi Region Police, disclosed that a report had been filed by Tukamuhabwa’s mother at Nyakishenyi Police station and subsequently at Rukungiri Police station.
The crime scene has been investigated, processed, and a postmortem examination has been conducted. One suspect, Robert Birungi, the area chairperson, has been arrested for further investigation, while others involved are currently eluding capture.
