Security Seals off NUP Headquarters; leaders arrested

Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Businesses in Kamwokya and nearby areas remain shuttered as military and police forces have cordoned off the region. This move is aimed at preventing National Unity Platform-NUP supporters and their leaders from gathering at their headquarters for a press conference and national prayers, commemorating those allegedly killed, arrested, or kidnapped during the party’s three-year existence.

NUP’s President, Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, was slated to lead the event. However, this morning, the police and army blocked all access routes to the NUP Headquarters, effectively halting both vehicular and pedestrian traffic. Those who attempted to proceed were swiftly detained and transported to Kira Road police station. The total number of arrests remains undisclosed.

Among those apprehended are NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya, Spokesperson Joel Ssenyonyi, and Fred Nyanzi, the Secretary for Mobilization. They are currently being held at Kira Road police station.

Before his arrest, Ssenyonyi expressed surprise at the heavy security presence, asserting the party’s right to convene with its supporters for any planned activities. He affirmed their commitment to pursuing their objectives until Uganda is liberated from President Museveni’s governance.

Rubongoya voiced his concerns about the arbitrary arrests of party members, viewing it as evidence of the state’s apprehension of the very people it claims to govern.

Alex Waiswa Mufumbiro, the NUP deputy spokesperson, stated that the security forces’ actions demonstrate that Uganda has not yet attained true independence. However, he emphasized that such actions only strengthen their resolve to continue advocating for change in the country.
