Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Frank Baine, the Senior Commissioner of Prisons, has vehemently denied the accusations of starvation made by the prisoners on trial for the Magara murder case.

On Tuesday, October 31, it came to light that these inmates had informed their attorney that they had missed supper the day before and breakfast while in custody at Uganda’s Maximum Security Prison in Upper Luzira.

Contrary to these claims, Baine clarified that the same prisoners had partaken in dinner after their court appearance on Monday, and they had also been served breakfast on the morning of October 31, just like all the other inmates, before heading to court.

Furthermore, he pointed out that there was evidence of their visitors, as their names were duly recorded in the prison’s visitor log. In total, these prisoners had received visits from 10 individuals, as documented by Baine.

Baine firmly stated, “It is entirely untrue that these prisoners are suffering from hunger and have been denied visits in court.”

He also emphasized that the Uganda prison system is committed to upholding the Mandela rules, which define international standards for the treatment of offenders.
