Suspect Charged with Murder in Connection to Road Rage Incident in Kampala

Kampala, 1st August 2023 – The Territorial Police in Kampala Metropolitan Police – South and Katwe Division have brought charges against a suspect in connection with a road rage-related murder that occurred in Kabowa, Lubaga division on the 15th of July 2023. The incident, which resulted in the loss of a life, has sparked outrage and condemnation from the community.

According to the gathered facts, the incident took place in Kironde Zone when a taxi, carrying mourners en route to a burial, was involved in a minor accident with a bodaboda rider named Wasswa, who was carrying a female passenger. Tempers flared, and a heated argument erupted between the boda boda rider and the taxi driver, drawing in the other occupants of the taxi.

In a tragic turn of events, Ssentongo Reagan, one of the taxi passengers, emerged from the vehicle and allegedly pushed Wasswa, the bodaboda rider, with such force that he fell and hit his head on the road, causing him to collapse. Teopista, the boda boda passenger, raised an alarm, claiming that Wasswa had succumbed to the injuries.

Angry residents from Kisenyi metal yard, along with other responders, gave chase to Ssentongo Reagan as he attempted to flee from the scene. The suspect was eventually apprehended by PC Baluku, who was later overpowered by the mob. The suspect was handed over to police in Ndeeba but not before sustaining critical injuries during the ordeal. He was rushed to Mulago Hospital for medical treatment. Unfortunately, Ssentongo Reagan succumbed to his injuries on the 23rd of July 2023 while still at Kirudu Hospital.

The aftermath of the incident saw a demonstration by relatives of the deceased, who were devastated by the loss of their loved one. The protesters marched through Kisenyi and eventually left the body at the railway line, leading to further intervention by the police. The body was later transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.

The authorities have strongly condemned the senseless act of violence and lawlessness that led to the loss of life. They emphasize that there is no justification for such aggressive behavior, which poses a significant risk to public safety. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of road rage and its potential to cause irreparable harm.

The suspect, Ssentongo Reagan, appeared in court on the 28th of July 2023, facing murder charges related to the incident. The authorities have assured the public that those who endanger the lives of others on the road through violent acts will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The community remains saddened by the tragic loss of life and is hopeful that justice will be served in this case. As the legal proceedings unfold, it is essential for all road users to exercise restraint and prioritize safety to prevent similar incidents in the future.
