GULU, UGANDA – The U.S. Embassy joyfully announces the successful completion of vital infrastructure projects across seven districts in Northern Uganda. These transformative initiatives encompass refurbished educational facilities, improved transportation networks, and enhanced water supply through boreholes, all of which will significantly elevate the living standards of numerous individuals in the region. Moreover, these projects stand as a tangible representation of the enduring partnership between the U.S. government and the Ugandan people.

The comprehensive endeavors are part of the Northern Uganda Development of Enhanced Local Governance Infrastructure and Livelihoods (NUDEIL) program, generously funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Launched in 2009, this initiative aims to empower communities affected by the prolonged armed conflict with the Lord’s Resistance Army, facilitating their recovery and growth.

“Though infrastructure typically does not fall under USAID’s primary focus, the NUDEIL program recognized the pressing need to aid communities devastated by the war,” said Richard Nelson, USAID/Uganda Mission Director. “We envision that these projects, including roads and schools, will have a lasting impact. Improved learning environments for students and teachers will lead to higher enrollment and retention rates, thousands of households will gain access to clean drinking water, and previously isolated communities will now have roads connecting them to markets, schools, and health centers,” Richard Nelson added.

Following the NUDEIL model, local district governments are actively involved in the planning, designing, and implementation of meaningful infrastructure projects that target education, transportation, and water supply services. USAID provides the necessary funding and oversees the development of these projects to ensure their successful execution.

The latest projects handed over to the communities this week include the Atiak-Karawal Road in Amuru District, along with classroom blocks, teacher housing units, and pit latrines at primary schools in Lamwo, Kitgum, and Nwoya districts.

This marks the completion of the fourth and final phase of NUDEIL, which has also made significant contributions to the development of Gulu, Omoro, and Oyam districts. The cumulative achievements of NUDEIL since its inception in 2009 are truly remarkable, boasting:

– Rehabilitation and improvement of 437 KM of roads

– Rehabilitation or construction of 617 boreholes

– Rehabilitation or construction of 187 buildings, including classroom blocks, teacher housing units, and latrines

As part of ensuring the accountability and success of these endeavors, USAID conducted visits to various ongoing NUDEIL projects this week, working closely with partners such as the Ministry of Local Government and district officials.
