Summary:

  • Three male inmates, including a suspected defiler, robber, and murderer, escaped from Mityana government prison, triggering a manhunt, with a similar incident reported earlier in Pakwach district this year.

Three male inmates escaped from Mityana government prison on Wednesday afternoon, prompting a serious manhunt by joint security agencies in the district. The incident occurred around 4 pm as inmates were returning to their wards after meals.

According to the police, the escaped trio includes a suspected defiler, robber, and murderer. Preliminary findings suggest that four individuals jumped over the fence, but one was successfully re-arrested.

In a statement, Wamala regional police spokesperson Racheal Kawala identified the escapees as Francis Mfitumukiza, 24, facing charges of murder and aggravated robbery; Gideon Nasasira, 37, charged with aggravated robbery; and Joseph Hakiza, 27, facing charges of aggravated defilement. All are from various districts.

The police have registered a case of escape from lawful custody (Mityana CRB 1197) and are actively pursuing the suspects. They encourage anyone with information to contact the police or report to the nearest police station.

This marks the second prison break of the year in Mityana, with similar incidents reported in January 2023 in Pakwach district and in 2020 in Moroto district, where a significant number of prisoners escaped from government prisons.
